With access to great Gulf shrimp, I am always searching for delicious ways to prepare it. This is delicious and easy and best served with steamed sushi rice. I used some pink grapefruit juice for my citrus, but orange, lemon or lime would work as well. The orange and grapefruit are a bit sweeter.

Spicy, sweet, easy and delicious!

Yield 2-3

  • 1 pound gulf shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 3 tablespoons white miso
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1 tablespoon Sambal Olek (adjust for heat preference )
  • 1 tablespoon sake
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 tablespoons canola oil
  • Black sesame seeds for garnish
  • Fresh mint for garnish

In a small saucepan, slowly heat the miso, honey, sake, grapefruit juice and sambal olek to a simmer and whisk until smooth. Keep warm while you prepare shrimp.

In a large heavy bottom or cast iron skillet, heat the oil until almost smoking. Pat shrimp dry with paper towel and season shrimp with salt and pepper. Sear shrimp for about 3 minutes per side. When cooked, turn off flame and using a pastry brush brush the shrimp on either side with the prepared sauce. Transfer to plates and serve with steamed rice. Drizzle remaining sauce on the shrimp. Garnish with black sesame seeds and a bit of fresh mint. Serve immediately and enjoy!
